How to get the WhatsApp green tick (Official Business Account) in the UAE and GCC

The green tick is not verification. Your business can be fully verified, sending templates at full volume, and still not have it — because the tick is a judgement about notability, made by a person at Meta, and most of the guidance online is about the wrong review.

Verified business versus Official Business Account

Business verification proves to Meta that your legal entity exists and you represent it. It takes a trade licence and two to five working days, and it unlocks the higher sending tiers. Every business that sends templates has it. The Official Business Account — the green tick next to your name — is a separate, discretionary review of whether your brand is notable enough that a customer would want to know a message really came from you. Meta grants it to a small fraction of applicants, does not publish the criteria, and does not explain a decline.

What the tick changes for a customer: your display name shows in the chat header even if they have not saved you, and the name is shown instead of the number in notifications. What it does not change: deliverability, pricing, sending limits or template review. A business chasing the tick for reach is chasing the wrong thing; a business chasing it for trust in a market where impersonation on WhatsApp is common has a real reason.

What Meta actually weighs

Meta's reviewers look for the brand outside Meta. In practice that means coverage in publications they can find — Gulf News, Khaleej Times, The National, Arab News, Al Bayan, Al Riyadh — a Wikipedia entry or a well-populated Wikidata item, and organic search results that put your brand name on the first page. Follower counts on your own Instagram do not count; they are yours. Neither does paid coverage that reads as a press release.

Two things are prerequisites rather than factors: business verification must be complete, and two-step verification must be enabled on the number. An application submitted before either is declined without review. The display name must also already have passed its own review and match the brand as the press knows it — a legal entity name that differs from the trading name is the commonest silent failure.

  1. Finish business verification and turn on two-step verification. Both are visible in WhatsApp Manager; neither is negotiable.
  2. Collect five links that show the brand in third-party press or reference sites, with the brand name in the headline. Not your own site, not your own social profiles.
  3. Apply from WhatsApp Manager — Phone numbers, the number, Official Business Account — with those links. A BSP can submit on your behalf, and the answer is the same.
  4. If declined, wait thirty days before reapplying, and reapply only with new coverage. Resubmitting the same application is declined faster the second time.

The Gulf-specific angle

Arabic-language coverage counts, and reviewers can read it. A brand covered only in Arabic press should still list those articles rather than translating them; a brand with an Arabic and an English trading name should apply under the one the press uses more. Government-owned and semi-government entities in the UAE and Saudi Arabia are granted the tick readily; a private business in the same sector is held to the notability bar like any other. And in every GCC market the tick is worth applying for once the press exists — impersonation of banks, delivery companies and government services on WhatsApp is the most common local fraud, and the tick is what tells a customer which of two identical display names to trust.

What goes wrong

Applying with a display name that differs from the brand in the press.
Change the display name first — its own review takes hours to days — and apply for the tick under the name a journalist would search for.
Buying an "OBA guaranteed" service from an agency.
Nobody can guarantee a discretionary review. What an agency can legitimately do is earn the coverage Meta looks for — which is PR, priced and timed like PR.
Treating the decline as a problem with the account.
It is not. Sending, templates and limits are unaffected. Keep building the brand's footprint and reapply when there is something new to show.

Common questions

Does Meta Verified (the paid subscription) give the green tick?
Meta Verified for business is a separate paid product with its own blue badge, available in some markets for WhatsApp Business app accounts. It is not the Official Business Account review, it is not available for API numbers in the GCC at the time of writing, and buying it does not shortcut the green tick.
How long does the Official Business Account review take?
Usually a few days to two weeks. A decline arrives with no reason; an approval shows as the tick appearing on the number in WhatsApp Manager. There is no status page, so a reviewer asking for more information is the only mid-review contact you will get.
